It’s that time of year again. After winning the Presidents’ Trophy for the second straight year, the Washington Capitals are back in the postseason. Pressure is at an all-time high for the Caps. The team has failed to advance pass the second round of the playoffs and is still looking for their first Stanley Cup during the Ovechkin-era.

To no one’s surprise, the Caps tore through the league and had another phenomenal regular season.  Fortunately for us, it’s the playoffs, so we can finally start giving a shit about hockey. Like many casual hockey fans, the die-hard Caps fans don’t give a shit about the regular season. Fans have seen the Caps own the NHL for the past couple of years and fall on their asses in the playoffs. After winning game 1 against the Toronto Maple Leafs in OT, the Caps looked to take a comfortable 2-0 lead in the series last night.

In typical Caps fashion, the Caps produced the nerve-wracking type of game that tortures their fans. The Caps fought back in the third period after a Backstrom goal tied the game at 3. At this point Caps fans were feeling pretty good. They stole all momentum and put a ton of pressure on the Leafs down the stretch. It seemed like only a matter of time before the Caps put one in the back of the net.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock in the 3rd period, Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen faced a flurry of chances. By some miracle, he stopped every shot. Anxiety filled the Verizon Center the longer this game went. Each team failed to convert a power-play opportunity in the first OT.  As the second overtime period got underway, the clock  crawled towards midnight in D.C. — which brings me to another point. How in the world is their not a 24 hour metro system in D.C? Fans that took the metro would’ve been forced to leave before midnight…before the game ended. However, the always accommodating Washington Capitals, made sure that didn’t happen. Kasperi Kapanen made a beautiful deke behind the net and set Brian Boyle up for the finisher. GAME OVER. Caps fall 4-3 in 2OT. Series tied 1-1. It’s gonna be another one of those postseasons Caps fans. Get your heart meds ready. See you in the psych unit in a couple of weeks.
